The Mobility Technician plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate patient mobility throughout the hospital. This individual functions as an extension of the rehabilitation and nursing teams—supporting patient transfers, repositioning, and ambulation to promote early mobility and functional recovery. Drawing from principles of physical therapy, ergonomics, and safe patient handling, the Mobility Technician helps optimize patient outcomes by encouraging activity, preserving strength, and reducing the risk of complications associated with immobility. The Mobility Technician will educate and coach staff on the proper use of mobility equipment and safe movement techniques.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, high-performing professional who takes ownership of outcomes, delivers exceptional service, and contributes directly to improved patient safety, recovery, and satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  1. Serve as a mobility and movement specialist, supporting nursing and therapy teams in safely mobilizing patients—transfers, lifts, ambulation, and repositioning.

  2. Educate and coach staff on proper use of mobility aids, lift equipment, and safe movement techniques.

  3. Promote early and progressive mobility, partnering with physical therapy and nursing staff to align mobility goals with individualized care plans.

  4. Proactively round on assigned units to identify patients appropriate for activity progression (e.g. up in chair, walking), ensuring timely interventions and safe participation.

  5. Support hospital wide fall prevention strategies, observing patient condition for issues like skin breakdown, and responding to the mobility needs of nursing and therapy departments.

  6. Coach and cue patients during mobility activities, encouraging independence and reinforcing therapy techniques such as gait training, balance, and postural control.

  7. Utilize and maintain all lift equipment and mobility devices; ensure staff adherence to safe patient handling protocols.

  8. Assist in implementing early mobility programs and monitor performance against established mobility benchmarks.

  9. Accurately document mobility activity, patient response, and level of assistance in the EMR.

  10. Collaborate with therapy and nursing teams to prevent falls, pressure injuries, and musculoskeletal strain—for both patients and staff.

  11. Participate in quality improvement and data collection initiatives focused on functional outcomes, patient participation, and safety metrics.

  12. Maintain a clean, organized, and fully functional inventory of mobility and lifting equipment.
