Smith Ironworks is an AISC Certified Fabricator specializing in structural and miscellaneous steel for commercial, industrial, and heavy-civil projects throughout Southern California and Nevada. We operate with a modern Tekla PowerFab workflow and take pride in accurate, audit-ready estimates, quality fabrication, and reliable project execution.
We are growing and looking to add an experienced Structural Steel Estimator to our team.
Position Overview
The Structural Steel Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive bids for structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication, and erection where applicable. This position will manage estimates from takeoff through proposal, working closely with the General Manager, detailing team, vendors, subcontractors, and shop personnel to help secure and deliver profitable projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and BIM/Tekla models
- Prepare estimates covering material, shop labor, detailing/NC, coatings, freight, and erection scope
- Apply burdened-cost and markup methodology consistently
- Clearly identify assumptions, exclusions, and scope clarifications
- Solicit, review, and level vendor and subcontractor quotes, including steel, galvanizing/paint, hardware, freight, and related services
- Prepare professional proposals, bid packages, and supporting estimate documentation
- Review contract documents, drawings, and specifications to confirm scope, codes, inclusions, and exclusions
- Maintain organized estimate records and support project handoff to project management and fabrication teams
- Track bid outcomes and assist with refining pricing and estimating practices as needed
Required Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of experience estimating structural and/or miscellaneous steel fabrication
- Ability to read and interpret structural, architectural, and shop drawings
- Working knowledge of AISC Code of Standard Practice and AWS D1.1
- Strong takeoff skills and proficiency with Excel and Bluebeam, or equivalent estimating tools
- Solid understanding of steel fabrication processes, connections, materials, and shop sequencing
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, vendors, and subcontractors
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Tekla PowerFab/EPM estimating and production platforms
- Familiarity with Tekla Structures, SDS/2, AutoCAD, or similar software
- Knowledge of California prevailing wage and public works bidding requirements
- Experience estimating erection scope, rigging, and crane-related work
